Electric Lawn Care Rebate Campaign

Gas-powered leaf blowers were banned in Washington, D.C., as of January 1, 2022. To help residents switch to electric leaf blowers before the ban, the D.C. Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) launched a campaign that included residential and commercial electric leaf blower rebates during the fall season. The campaign emphasized cost savings and the positive environmental impact and targeted audiences through local print and digital advertising. The DCSEU also launched a similar rebate program for electric lawnmowers the following spring and worked with local hardware stores to provide applications and counter cards at the point of purchase.

Don't Get Caught in the Dark Campaign

The federal lighting standard changed on January 1, 2023, making LED bulbs the new standard nationwide. This change resulted in the end of the DCSEU Retail Lighting Program, which provided discounted LED bulbs to D.C. residents via local retailers. The DCSEU launched the “Don’t Get Caught in the Dark” campaign six months before the program ended. Paid advertising was placed on transit shelters, and digital geotargeting was used to reach people on mobile devices. Retailers and vendors partnered with the DCSEU to provide additional discount advertising at the point of purchase using shelf talkers, price cards, and other in-store signage.
