Efficiency Smart hosted low-cost, high-impact social media contests to engage customers digitally during the pandemic. These contests eased customers’ financial burden of energy efficiency improvements and leveraged their influence to spread the word about energy efficiency. The contests were promoted through various channels, such as newsletters, utility bill messages, and earned media.
Efficiency Smart held contests for restaurants, non-profits, and schools. The Tip Jar contest had 100+ nominations for 43 restaurants, impacting all 26 communities in their service territory. Learn more here.
Appliance Recycling Rewards Events Pilot

Efficiency Smart offers an appliance recycling program to municipal utility electric customers. Specific communities are given a pre-scheduled drop-off date for cost-effective pickups. To encourage further participation, Efficiency Smart offered a bonus incentive and an energy efficiency kit drawing, which were promoted through various marketing channels.
The campaign successfully drove customers to events, with pilot communities recycling more units in their single-day event than in the previous year’s three-month campaign.
Over the past three years, website traffic increased by nearly 25% during the recycling campaign.
Local Retail Savings Campaign

Efficiency Smart collaborated with local retailers in select communities to provide cost-effective LED lighting options and increase brand recognition. Geotargeted print and digital advertisements, newsletters, and point-of-purchase displays were developed to reach customers within these specific areas. Additionally, all materials were translated into Spanish and French Creole to accommodate non-English-speaking customers and make the discounts available to a broader audience.
The campaign boosted sales of lightbulbs at local retail stores, with some stores selling out of the promoted products. It also led to the emergence of local champions who now encourage customers to choose more efficient options when shopping.
